A huge bird with a massive wingspan, the American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) has a sturdy bill and expandable pouch that are so large that this bird has an almost comical appearance. They fly in formation effortlessly and with grace. They are a migratory bird, wintering on the coast and then going inland to breed. This image was taken at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Reserve.
